This is a breath-taking and visceral narrative, interweaving the real-life experiences of the heroines combating gross inequality. Observing first-hand the war on the female race, she's experienced and interacted with the brave ones who fight back. ![]() With a 30-year-long career in human-rights journalism, she has travelled the globe and witnessed the worst a Sue Lloyd-Roberts joined ITN in 1973 as a news trainee, she went on to become the UK's first female video-journalist, reporting alone from the bleak outposts of the former Soviet Union and China. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We left home-Briar Hills, just north of Detroit-early enough to get us there by midafternoon of a hot, sunny day. I’d missed seeing everybody at the lake, though, and I couldn’t wait to make up for lost time. He extended the outing to include two weeks of vacation time, and we’d had a wonderful month on breathtaking beaches and going to luaus and scuba diving in perfect weather and water far clearer than Crystal Lake ever was. We had missed going to Crystal Lake the previous year, the way we’d done every summer as far back as I could remember, because Dad had a business trip to Hawaii and he wanted us to go with him. ![]() I had no hint that by the end of summer, nothing would ever be the same again. I had no idea what forces of change would reshape my life. I expected that summer to be special, because I was fourteen-to be fifteen in December-and maybe this year I’d be considered one of the “big kids” I’d always envied. ![]() ![]() ![]() As the semester starts, Maverick’s creative writing class gets taken over by none other than Clover. My dad’s advice has always been to make hockey my number-one priority-at least until I make it to the pros. It’s not untrue, but it’s not quite that simple either. After centuries of brilliance, the civilized world of the Bronze Age came to an abrupt and cataclysmic end. The pharaoh's army and navy managed to defeat them, but the victory so weakened Egypt that it soon slid into decline, as did most of the surrounding civilizations. In 1177 B.C., marauding groups known only as the Sea Peoples invaded Egypt. SynopsisĪ bold reassessment of what caused the Late Bronze Age collapse sheds light on the complex ties that gave rise to, and eventually destroyed, the flourishing civilizations of the Late Bronze Age-and set the stage for the emergence of classical Greece and, ultimately, our world today. Bringing to life a vibrant multicultural world, he draws a sweeping panorama of the empires of the age and shows that it may have been their very interdependence that hastened their dramatic collapse. ![]() Eric Cline tells the gripping story of how the end was brought about by multiple interconnected failures, ranging from invasion and revolt to earthquakes, drought, famine, and the cutting of international trade routes. ![]() ![]() The pharaoh's army and navy defeated them, but the victory so weakened Egypt that it soon slid into decline, as did most of the surrounding civilizations. Exquisite - Eimear McBride, Baileys Women's Prize-winning author * A Girl Is a Half-formed Thing *Įntrancing and tense. will be hard to beat - Daniel Hahn * Guardian *Ī strange, painfully tender exploration of the brutality of desire indulged and the fatality of desire ignored. Sentence by sentence, The Vegetarian is an extraordinary experience. It is sensual, provocative and violent, ripe with potent images, startling colours and disturbing questions. It's a bracing, visceral, system-shocking addition to the Anglophone reader's diet. Mind-blowing - Eileen Battersby * Irish Times * A work of savage beauty and unnerving physicality. Most of all, it is about the emptiness and rage of discovering there is nothing to be done when all hope and comfort fails. It is about escape and how a dreamer takes flight. is more than a cautionary tale about the brutal treatment of women: it is a meditation on suffering and grief. The Vegetarian quickly settles into a dark, menacing brilliance that is similar to the work of the gifted Japanese writer Yoko Ogawa in its devastating study of psychological pain. The writing throughout is precise and spare, with not a word wasted. ![]() ![]() It also involved a relatively blind shot in the dark, which goes against the grain of this entire book and the skills of a world renowned sniper who knows 1 shot = 1 kill. ![]() The climax of the book was anticlimactic and somewhat confusing and I had to listen to it 2 times and it was still unclear. It is just wasted gibberish worthless text. Silva can get away with it as the nonsensical self talk is related to the storyline, whereas in this book it is not. It's as if the author thinks he is smarter than David Silva when it is quite the opposite. If you enjoy quality writing, then you will be forced to fast forward 30 seconds like every 2-3 minutes or else you will be rolling your eyes and saying to yourself: are you kidking me!. ![]() But the author continuously goes insane with 1-3 minutes of endless annoying nonsensical loquacity, self talk and personal questions of no relative value. 18.5 hours - are you kidding me! If this was just 6 hours it'd be great, then maybe I'd give it 4-5 stars instead of 1 star. ![]() ![]() Swinging my legs off the side of the bed, I tugged on the back of Louie’s pajama pants to give him a partial wedgie as I got to my feet.
